Hi everyone,

We are a startup based out of Bucharest, Romania (with staff all over Europe), with a simple mission - to make cities entertaining.

At the moment, we do this by creating City Exploration Games, this term might not ring a bell and that's because we came up with it ourselves (we can't just point to the red bus driving through the centre and say we are similar).

City Exploration Games help travellers and locals to explore the city by foot, combining the best parts of a scavenger hunt, a role playing game and a guided tour - delivered through our app as you walk the city streets.

Currently we have more than 300 games in 130 cities, though, as a Romanian start-up, we don't claim to be an expert in each of these cities, so we create the games with local storytellers - content creators, hosts, tour guides and tourism businesses. Partners receive revenue from the games they helped create, and our customers get the benefit of exploring their city through a fun and immersive game created by a local storyteller with a passion for that city.

We're here to engage with the industry, gather feedback, and improve - so if you want to check out a game in your city - questoapp.com/cities - let me know.

We're also constantly working on new projects which require new games so if you're keen to build one follow the link above and, if there's a fit, let's create something fun.

Regards, Jake.

Hi Jake, thanks for sharing Questo with our community!

Very impressive that you've reached over 130 cites — and in many cities that are host to Travel Massive meetups, too! How did you initially grow your game creator community? Are there any regions of the world that you're most interested in?

Hi Ian,

Initially we hand picked the creators, then as we opened up the platform and expanded to more locations a large amount of people applying to be creators are users who found us while travelling.

We definitely still have regions we want to grow, the US and core European countries are top of mind - Germany in particular. Because each of our city exploration games has a theme - the great fire of London, exploring Bellu Cemetary in Bucharest, discovering the beer history in Brussels, etc - we have so many more stories from each city which are worth telling that we can create an experience around that the opportunities are endless, really.

Was great to have your founder join me on the Travel Massive Podcast in 2019. Super to watch you grow from strength to strength

I live in NYC and I love this as a way to explore my own city in a new way!

Hi Melissa,
Feedback we get from locals is definitely along those lines, and "I walk past X site every day, never knew the amazing story behind this" which always makes us smile!

Have a look at our NYC ones and let me know which one you want to try out (except the below one). I'll happily send you to one access for free in exchange for some feedback.

If you play our new Superheroes of New York experience this thanksgiving weekend, you have the chance to win $5,000 of Dogecoin - questoapp.com/city-games/superheroes-in-new-york

I think the idea is good (actually I had the same idea but then found out it was already realized by different companies). Anyway, I think 30% for creators is not enough. It should be at least 50/50 or actually 70/30 (70 for creators). You only have to maintain the website, creators have to maintain the trails, otherwise the trails will soon be broken as cities constantly change.

Hi Holger,
Thanks for your thoughts. There is more involved than just the trail and website, and if we create the experiences right then hopefully we do not require the maintainence levels you mention - if you're in Berlin, I'd be happy to send you access to check one out for free questoapp.com/cities/berlin-walking-tours

Well, you write on your homepage about creators: "You earn 30% of the profit your game generates in time. Earning simulation, on average: If your game is purchased by 3000 people, you get an extra $9000." Yes, but you make 21.000, and you make that on ALL trails of ALL creators. - I wanted to create the same concept with a 50/50 share initially, and later more for the creators, as soon as I can comfortably cover expenses and generate personal income. (I didn't realise my idea because only then I discovered that already different apps exist out there). I'm just sick of platforms where a few get millionaires while most people make a minimum income. I'm not blaming you, that's what we see everywhere right no. But in the long run the share is disproportionate. Your German competitor lialo.de leaves 70% share to the creators.

Hi Holger,
The above is a misguided view. Primarily because, in your example, the 9000 is a profit, where the 21000 is a revenue.
The revenue is put back into the business to drive more people to the platform, thus increasing bookings and, in turn, the profits the creators receive from the game they helped create (which they were also paid cash up front to help create).
I'm not here to debate business 101 and I am unsure where your dislike of platforms comes from, but it is unrealted to Questo. My offer, of course, remains if you wish to play one of our games.
Regards, Jake.

I certainly know the difference between revenue and profit. I just doubt that you will spend more than 50% of the revenue for marketing and operations in the long run. (It might be so in the beginning as long as you're growing). I do wish you success, btw, I just hope that you will reconsider the share for creators as soon as you make good profit. - The internet is full of articles about the problems associated with the platform economy and gig economy, you can just research these terms. - If I play one of your games, I will also pay for it. Best
