👋 Hello Travel Massive community, I'm excited to introduce myself and my project, TravelerMap ⛰️🗺️. My name is Kacper Goliński, and I'm a software engineer from Poland who loves both coding and the great outdoors. That's why I created TravelerMap, a website where you can explore national parks all over the world using big interactive maps.
Travel blogs and marketing websites often show only "good parts" and leave out important information about travel destinations. That's why TravelerMap aims to provide real, no-fluff information to help people plan their nature adventures. And because I believe in the power of community, I'm currently working on adding user accounts and social features to the website, which will enable travelers to share their own experiences and insights.
TravelerMap is still in its early stages, but I'm committed to continuing to improve and expand the website. I believe that by providing a platform for real and authentic information about national parks, I can help people connect with nature around the world. I would love to hear from you and incorporate your input into the future development of the platform.
💸 As I continue to develop and expand TravelerMap, I'm exploring ways to monetize the website. One possibility I'm considering is partnering with affiliate travel programs. If you have any suggestions or recommendations for such programs, I would love to hear from you. Please feel free to reach out and let me know your thoughts.
Thank you for your time and support, and I'm looking forward to connecting with other travel enthusiasts here on Travel Massive.
Hey Kacper, thanks for sharing your project with the Travel Massive community.
Awesome to see another website built with Elixir in the travel space :)
Do you have plans to pull in meta data of the parks? (Eg the information in the sidebar of the Wikipedia pages such as elevation, area, etc)
You could perhaps build a comparison tool, or list of rankings by particular attributes.
A gamified aspect could be to allow users to mark the parks they’ve visited, and share their list and rankings. That’s where it could get interesting and competitive!
One way of monetizing you might not have considered is building a weekly newsletter which is sponsored by outdoor brands. You have plenty of content and you could automate it - scan the news related to all the national parks and summarize it. I’d subscribe to that!
Hope this feedback is helpful and keep us posted with new features!
Yeah, meta data are on the radar. And a comparison tool would be a really interesting feature.
Also, I was thinking about allowing users to mark places they visited. I think this will be the next feature I'll build. Just after I finish user accounts and reviews. This is something I want to use myself :)
The newsletter is a great suggestion. Thanks for the feedback! Helpful for sure.
Loving the new updates this week... can you share a quick round-up of what's new?
Sure! I've recently released few major features:
* user accounts which opens lots of new possibilities
* users can mark places as visited and see them on their own map, example with my visited parks: travelermap.net/users/caspg/places This is what you suggested in your other comment :)
* reviews with ratings
What's next? I want to create place where you can discover other community members, see their rankings etc So again, feature that you suggested. Right now, I'm working on user photo uploads. People will be able to add their own photos to parks and also see them on map.
We are also thinking about adding more type of content. Maybe mountains and trails. This would all play nicely because they are often part of parks.
Lot's of stuff ahead so stay tuned :)
Hey this is a great idea and a useful resource. I am heading to the US in May on a road trip around as many parks as possible on my route from Chicago to Las Vegas. I saw some of the smaller locations don't have information yet, so if you are ever looking for people to research, let me know, as I will be visiting many of these areas in May. :)
