Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a small personal project I’ve been working on called Travel Value Score.
I’m actually a dentist, not a developer or someone who works in the travel industry. I just enjoy traveling and have always found myself comparing different destinations and wondering where my money would actually go the furthest.
So in my spare time, I started building a website that compares countries based on overall travel value. The idea is to look beyond just which places are cheapest and instead help people find destinations where they can get good value based on where they’re traveling from.
It’s still a pretty new project and I’m continuing to improve it whenever I have time. I’d genuinely appreciate any feedback, especially from people here who know the travel industry much better than I do.

However, travelling through countries which currency is being degraded might sound a bit unethical and I'm not sure if that's the type of tourims i would like to push.
Anyways, I like it a lot as an infromative website! Congrats!
Most successful tourism destinations benefit from having an attractive currency - look at Japan, Thailand, Australia, etc. What matters is spending your money where it goes into the local economy and won't get extracted (eg via foreign owned hotels or mass package tours).
The safety score needs a bit of elaboration though. This is highly subjective as every city in the world has some dangerous places.
Safety score is definitely being worked on further.
The difficulty definitely is that safety is indeed subjective and safety varies even within the country. So for this reason, it becomes even more difficult for a geographically larger country like Australia/USA for example. I will continue to look for a better solution.

I'd be more interested in a "travel disruption" index which factored in things such as public transport strikes (happens a lot in "safe" countries), average monthly airport delays and cancellations, and major weather events (e.g typhoons, extreme heat waves, etc).
Great to hear your ideas! There is certainly no shortage of factors that can be added onto the website. Major weather events especially can be a huge deciding factor in deciding or even cancelling already booked trip.

I know currency alone does not fully reflect the value for travelling to a country so I added in other factors as well to calculate the score (seasonality, safety, weather, etc). I will continue to refine the methods of scoring!
This has great potential usage, however, I'm not 100% agreeing with the currency advantage rankings, or I could be misunderstanding it. Ex. South Africa, I was just there last month and the US dollar goes a long way and accomodation were very inexpensive. Just because the advantage went down a bit doesn't mean it's not overall extremely strong. (I could be totally misunderstanding that stat though)
Even if the U.S. dollar still goes a long way in a country, the score can be lower if the exchange rate is not as favorable as it was 12 months or 5 years ago. A lower safety score can also bring down the overall score.
That said, you’re absolutely right. Even if the currency advantage has weakened compared with the past, a country that is still very affordable should receive more credit for that affordability.
There are quite a few factors that go into determining the overall travel value score, so I’m currently working on fine-tuning how much weight each factor should have in the final calculation.
I don’t think it will ever be possible to make the scoring system perfectly match everyone’s priorities, since different travelers value affordability, safety, currency strength, weather, and other factors differently. My goal is to find the best overall balance so the score is as useful as possible for most travelers.
