I’m part of a small team working with independent tourism businesses in Northern Thailand.
We’ve noticed that many local operators struggle not because of a lack of quality or interest, but because demand is highly irregular. Busy seasons can be strong, but the gaps in between are difficult to manage.
We’re still trying to understand what actually helps small tourism businesses stay sustainable under these conditions.
I’d really value insights or examples from other regions: what strategies have you seen work when demand is unstable?
I believe partnering with local dmcs, hotels, and itinerary planners can help so one can diversify the bookings. Also, building an online strong presence so the right audience can find us directly on our social media and website is vital.
I’m Dawit, an Ethiopian tour operator passionate about designing authentic itineraries that highlight Ethiopia’s heritage, diverse tribal cultures, and breathtaking landscapes. My focus is on sustainable tourism that connects travelers with local communities.
Small tourism businesses survive unstable demand by staying flexible and creative. In my work, I diversify experiences—combining cultural immersion with adventure—while building strong local partnerships that add authenticity and reduce costs. Clear client communication, quick itinerary adaptation, and investing in digital visibility help us remain trusted and resilient even when demand shifts.
