I have found many local communities to be the most impactful and memorable for me; some of those are from when I hiked the Appalachian Trail, such as WoodsHole Hostel in Virginia, USA; or when I participated with the WWOOF (work for stay volunteer program - international) program, or even when I roadtripped across the United States 4 times and once to Montreal and back.

I would consider Woods Hole Hostel to be my first 'job' pertaining to travel - it was a majority of domestic tasks for maintaining the hostel and bed n breakfast - alongside occasional maintenance needs of the homestead overall that included more rigorous tasks.
