About me

I was born and raised in Mexico City and have been an Environmental Lawyer for 13 years. I have had diverse personal and professional experiences in different countries which have boosted my passion for working towards the Sustainable Development Goals. I have worked within the private, public and social sectors as a Lawyer and as a Consultant which has given me a better understanding of how to achieve community empowerment.

In the next paragraphs, I will describe both my academic background and professional experiences which have reinforced
my passions and understanding of environmental topics and community development projects.

I am currently working on a community development project in Troncones, Guerrero, Mexico, that intends to develop and build an environmental and cultural corridor. The project is based on the sustainability and protection of natural resources and consists of public events, art workshops and artistic campaigns that help raise and improve environmental awareness in the region.

Prior to this project, I worked as an environmental lawyer within the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA) in Mexico. This experience widened my knowledge of the Mexican environmental legal framework, and reinforced my understanding of the efforts needed for improving and strengthening a national environmental policy.

My current passions were also influenced by a volunteer/trainee program I participated in, in Tampere, Finland. I left my work with PROFEPA to pursue a more in depth understanding of international sustainable development and environmental policy. I worked as a sustainable development assistant positioned within the Economic and Urban Development and its Sustainable Community Unit. This experience taught me about the environmental policies, and their implementation and enforcement, through municipal projects and campaigns.

I completed my postgraduate studies within the Master of International and Comparative Law at the University of Lapland. I reaffirmed and strengthened my understanding of environmental policies and legislation, human rights, and my commitment to specialize in and mitigating climate change. My master's thesis was entitled, "Protection of the Sacred Sites of the Indigenous Wixárika People. Domestic and Legal perspective.”; it mainly focused on human rights (right to environment; to development; enjoy one’s own culture), international and Mexican environment law, and indigenous people's rights (right to consultation; to free, prior and informed consent; self-determination).

My diverse experineces and education have influenced my passions and commitment to my current project. If my project is chosen, it will focus on the education and empowerment of the communities we work with, boosting inclusive economic development and working to mitigate and tackle climate change.
