About me

I am an award-winning travel essayist. My work has appeared in numerous publications including, the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Los Angeles Times, San Diego Union-Tribune, Escape, Américas, Caribbean Travel & Life, Northwest Airlines World Traveler, Insight Guide to Hispaniola, National Geographic Explorer and I also teach travel writing at conferences and colleges.

In 1995 and 1999, I won the Lowell Thomas Award given by the Society of American Travel Writers for excellence in adventure travel journalism. My memoir, Places in Time was named Best Travel Book by the North American Travel Journalists Association and named Best Travel Narrative from the Society of American Travel Writers. Now Places in Time has been re-printed by the legendary Capra Press in an enlarged second edition

I am passionate about discovering the world’s cultures and my travel perspective is always through the lens of people—who they are, what they do and what they believe and most importantly, why we should know them.
