About me

Want to learn more about John Finch Travel? My personal passion for travel and photography started at a very young age. My parents would load me into the car and I would accompany them on their own travel adventures. I admit to not always being the easiest of travellers as a child.

Travelling with my parents not only exposed me to local South African travel but also exposed me to international travel. As a child I travelled to South America, North America and the United Kingdom. Economy class seats seemed so huge in those early days.

Little did I know that this would be the start of a life of exploration and travel. Travel addiction will totally change your life and the way you view the world. Today, home for me is Cape Town, South Africa. It’s from this beautiful city that I lead travel groups throughout Southern Africa.

I have since travelled to over 50 countries around the globe and am looking forward to many more adventures. The more you travel, the longer the bucket list gets. Unfortunately COVID19 has put a bit of a hold on international travel but as we head into 2021 it looks like we all may soon be starting to travel again.

My passion for photography has evolved so much since I started out as a teenager with my Praktica film camera. Every single shot counted as my pocket money was used to develop the film at the local CNA. I can remember waiting with great expectation to see how my photographs had turned out, once developed, and often feeling disappointed at the results.

Today everything is digital and we have so much better control over the results. I am completely self taught and my photography has evolved with much trial and error. My photography has since been published in magazines and international newspapers like The Telegraph

I have been working as a professional tour guide and trip leader in Southern Africa for the past 25 years. I have worked for most leading tour operators in South Africa and a number of well known American tour operators. I have also been invited by American tour operators to participate in leadership programs held in the United States. This has helped me to develop a much deeper understanding of the market that I operate in.

Many times on my trips, my clients would ask why I don’t publish my photographs and publish more about what I do. So after 25 years of suggestions and procrastination I have finally taken the leap and published this blog.

John Finch Travel, the blog, focusses on Southern Africa. The information is up to date as I travel and lead tours and safaris in Southern Africa on a full time basis. I am sharing my own personal experiences and my sometimes candid views and narratives of the places and people I interact with while on tour in Southern Africa. Things change rapidly in Africa and the aim of my blog is to keep you up to date with our changing world.

It is my sincere hope that you find inspiration in my photography and travel blog posts at John Finch Travel. Follow your own dreams to travel to far away locations to see the wonders of our world for yourself.

It would be my privilege to help you create your own personal adventure of a lifetime when you visit Southern Africa. Reach out to me and let’s start planning your next adventure.

“Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart, and on your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.” – Anthony Bourdain
