About this event

Join us on our next tweetchat as we explore this interesting discourse with award-winning American travel writer, Todd Pitock.

This topic is aimed at inspiring young writers and journalists in the travel and tourism industry to strive for excellence in their craft. We want new entrants, as well as veterans, to look beyond the "shallow blogging" practice that is gradually replacing in-depth reporting.

This tweetchat will open your eyes to the opportunities embedded in travel writing - exposure, influence, partnerships, monetary rewards, awards, etc. Todd will chronicle, in an engaging manner, how he attained the height he's got gotten to - in a bid to help people position themselves for the future.

He'll be talking about books he has read, writing skills you should acquire, educational training to sign up for, online and offline associations to join, and other practical steps necessary for success as a travel writer and journalist.

Todd lived in South Africa for several years and has reported stories across the continent, and around the world. His work has appeared in National Geographic Traveler, DIscover, Forbes, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Smithsonian and many others. Earlier this month he received the American Society of Journalists & Authors Award. It was his 8th in the past 10 years. He has been a recipient of grants from the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Investigative Reporters and Editors, and the Lily Fellowship on Religion Writing.

Last year, he won the Planet Earth award for environmental travel writing for his reporting in Greenland, and in 2015 a half-dozen journalism awards included the Lowell Thomas as Travel Journalist of the Year by the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. Todd lives in Philadelphia, America’s birthplace. He has, regrettably, not yet been to Nigeria β€” an omission he hopes to address before too long.
