About me

Adventurer, curious traveler, photojournalist, and lover of gin. I am passionate about travel, nature, photography, art, writing, discovery, and creativity.

Winner of multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals from NATJA for travel writing & photography excellence -- earning medals every year since 2018. Gold medal winner 2021 to 2024 in the IFWTWA Travel Photography Awards, Best in Show award winner in the 2023 and 2024 photography awards, and winner of the Excellence in Journalism award in 2022. Winner of a Juror's Award and Best in Show in the 2023 California State Fair photography competition. Winner of multiple awards in the 2023 OWAA Excellence in Craft competition – 2nd place Outdoor Adventure Writing; 3rd place Photo Essay; 3rd place Action Photography; 3rd place Wildlife Photography. Winner of a gold and silver in the OWAA Excellence in Craft competition for nature photography.

I have authored 16 books and penned hundreds of feature articles over the years. My byline has appeared in Backpacker, Men's Journal, Men's Health, Outside, The San Jose Mercury News, Portland Oregonian, etc.. My travels have taken me to all seven continents and 50 states in the United States.

I am a member in good standing of the Outdoor Writers Association of America (OWAA), the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), TravMedia, and the Adventure Travel Trade Association (ATTA) as a media member.

Everything and everywhere I travel to ... it's why I am a travel writer. I get sent on assignments to learn, indulge my curiosity, and share what I have learned and there's nothing better than that.

I have not been to TBEX yet (was registered for my first until a little distraction called COVID shut the world down for a bit). I hope to attend one in the future, but for now travel assignments keep getting in the way. However I think I can speak with... show more
