About me

I was born in Holland, and moved to Canada as a child. I've always travelled, and started writing about travel for The Toronto Star after years of writing about technology. I often reviewed cameras and took advantage of travel to take photos to illustrate the reviews. As the transition to digital reduced the number of freelance articles, I also added video production and currently produce videos about cameras, travel and cycling - often combining all three of my interests.

Why did you join the community?

I'd like to collaborate with other travel media professionals on video projects.

What is your favorite travel destination?

We've cycled in the south of France several times, and our experiences along the Canal du Midi have really been exceptional. It's a beautiful canal, filled with history and dotted with charming small towns, delightful cafés and charming inns.

Where do you dream of traveling to?

South Africa - so much interesting history in a gorgeous setting.

What was your first travel job?

As a freelance technology writer for The Toronto Star, my editor asked if I would like a travel assignment. He sent me to Curacao. The Curacao tourist board made sure that my days were packed with fun and interesting activities.

What do you want to learn more about?

There are many intriguing destinations on the planet, but the attraction of staying in a room in a floating hotel that takes you to scenic and historic destinations is one that particularly appeals to me.

Three words that describe why we should travel?

We travel to find ADVENTURE, having experiences that are outside our day to day lives. We should travel to better UNDERSTAND our planet and the other people and cultures who share our world. Finally, we travel to EXPERIENCE the many regions of our planet.
