Bijan is an expert in risk assessment and has more than 20 years of experience in disaster risk management. Bijan has led teams of consultants and scientists as Project Manager in many international consulting and research projects on crisis risk management on behalf of the UN, World Bank and other multilateral agencies.

In 2016 he led the private-public partnership to develop the global multi-hazard disaster risk management and climate change standards for hotels and resorts for the Global Initiative for Disaster Risk Management. This has led to the founding of Hotel Resilient in 2020, a scientific benchmarking and hotel advisory company based in Germany. Bijan holds Masters and Doctoral degrees in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, and has worked as a research scientist in disaster resilience at Columbia University (New York), Kyoto University (Japan) and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany).
