About this event

The summer travel season is well underway. This time of the year often means traveling to exotic locations and encountering unknown cultures. As travelers, we may consider environmentally sustainable travel, but we rarely discuss traveling culturally respectful way. We sometimes travel in culturally sensitive areas with isolated communities, ancient cultures, indigenous communities, and other sensitive populations.

We have gathered a panel of experts to discuss this critical topic and to kick off a dialogue with you our guests. Panelists include:
Fatimata Gakou, Community Affairs Manager of Hostelling International DC
Edward Hall III, Transportation Specialist, Tourism Coordinator, Bureau of Indian Affairs
Sophia Hyder Hock, Founder/CEO: Papilia

We will be exploring such important questions as:
How to travel to sensitive areas?
How to respect cultural boundaries?
What is appropriate to share on social media?
How to avoid cultural commodification/appropriation?

We will have light bites and refreshments following the discussion.

This event is co-hosted by Hostelling International.
