About me

James Cave is the author of Moving to Portugal Made Simple, now in its second edition, and the best-selling humor book, German Men Sit Down to Pee. James Cave is also the founder of Portugalist, an independent English-language guide to moving to and living in Portugal.

Portugalist covers residency visas including the D7, the Digital Nomad Visa, and the Golden Visa, along with NIF numbers, bank accounts, property, healthcare, taxes, and where to live.

Originally from Ireland, James Cave has lived in northern Portugal, Lisbon, and the Algarve, and has traveled across the whole of Portugal. That first-hand experience is what the writing is built on.

Portugalist is free to read and has been featured in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes, and The Independent. Where readers need professional help, Portugalist points them to independent Portuguese lawyers and immigration specialists.

Why did you join the community?

To go to the Lisbon meetups. Portugalist was a food and travel blog then, and I wanted to meet other people doing the same thing. These days, Portugalist is no longer a food and travel blog but a relocation guide. However, I still enjoy meeting food and travel writers.

What is your favorite travel destination?

I should obviously say Portugal, and that's not a lie. But I've enjoyed traveling around the US more than anywhere else recently.

Where do you dream of traveling to?

Argentina. I've wanted to go for years and keep not going.

What was your first travel job?

Skyscanner, managing relationships with travel bloggers. Before that I worked at Bigmouthmedia, an SEO agency, and wrote for travel brands including British Airways and Hilton.

What do you want to learn more about?

Writing more books. I've written practical ones (like Moving to Portugal Made Simple) and funny ones (like German Men Sit Down To Pee), and I'd like to do more of the funny ones.
